About Variegated Greens

Variegated Greens is a home-based Canadian plant business rooted in observation, cultivation, and a deep appreciation for the extraordinary diversity found in nature.

From my growing space in Markham, Ontario, I cultivate and thoughtfully select plants for those across Canada who share a passion for observing the remarkable expressions Mother Nature creates.

I believe every plant has something to show us. Variegation may be part of that story, but it is not the whole story. Colour, texture, form, silver patterning, growth, and the way an individual plant develops over time can each make it worthy of closer observation.

At Variegated Greens, cultivation begins with observation. Rather than forcing growth, I allow each plant to develop at its own pace while paying close attention to how it responds to its environment.

My growing approach is inspired by the conditions plants experience in nature. I work to recreate elements of the tropical understory through thoughtful attention to light, temperature, humidity, airflow, watering, nutrition, and natural day-and-night rhythms.

My cultivation philosophy is rooted in balance rather than excess. Nutrition is applied with restraint, light is considered alongside the plant’s other environmental needs, and the dark period is treated as an important part of the growing cycle. Temperatures are allowed to fall when the grow lights are off, creating a distinct day-and-night transition that supports the plant’s natural circadian rhythm.

My plants are grown in a predominantly mineral-based medium using hard Akadama and Fluval Stratum. This combination allows me to maintain an airy root environment while closely observing and managing moisture, nutrition, and root development as each plant grows.

The goal is not to manufacture a particular expression, but to provide an environment in which the plant can reveal its own.

Mother Nature provides the masterpieces. Variegated Greens simply showcases them.

𝗢𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Variegated Greens was created not only as a place to offer plants, but also as a place to share what I learn from growing them.

Through Exploration Scrolls, the Horticultural & Botanical Names Library, the Variegated Greens Lexicon, and observations shared with the community, I document what I learn through cultivation while also exploring the botanical, horticultural, and historical information attached to the plants and names we encounter.

These observations are shared with customers and non-customers alike. They are not presented as absolutes, but as an invitation to look more closely, compare, ask questions, and continue observing.

Knowledge, like the plants themselves, continues to grow.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲

My collection continues to evolve. Variegated Greens currently focuses on plants such as Alocasia and Scindapsus, with Hoyas and other thoughtfully selected plants becoming part of the living collection over time.

While variegation is an important part of Variegated Greens, it does not define everything I appreciate. Some plants capture attention through silver patterning, unusual colour, texture, form, or other distinctive characteristics. Certain Hoyas, for example, are admired for remarkable silver expressions that can cover much of a leaf without being variegation in the traditional sense.

I select plants because there is something about their expression worth observing—not simply because they fit a label.

Leaf by leaf, a living mosaic.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆

Variegated Greens is more than an online plant store. It is a place for people who share a curiosity about plants and the many ways they can express themselves.

Whether someone grows for personal enjoyment, collects particular plants, sells plants themselves, is just beginning to explore the plant world, or simply enjoys observing, that shared passion is what connects the community.

Releases, observations, Exploration Scrolls, and the Lexicon are part of that exchange. A purchase is never required to take part in the conversation or to learn alongside me.

I invite those who share this passion to observe alongside me.

Variegated Greens is a home-based plant business located in Markham, Ontario, Canada.

Plants are available to plant enthusiasts across Canada through the Variegated Greens online store, with local pickup available in Markham. I currently ship within Canada only.

Because Variegated Greens operates from a private home rather than a retail storefront, it is not open for public walk-in shopping. Local pickup is arranged following an order.

Every plant offered through Variegated Greens is a living, actively growing plant. Plants may continue to produce new leaves or change between the time they are photographed and the time they are purchased. I inspect plants being released and update photographs when new growth materially changes the plant being represented.

As plants continue to grow and develop, Variegated Greens reserves the right to increase or decrease the listed price of an unsold plant to reflect its current size, condition, development, and observed expression. The price displayed at the time of purchase is the applicable price.
