“Andalas” is a horticultural name used for a variegated Scindapsus circulating in international plant trade.
The plant is also encountered horticulturally as Scindapsus Exotica Aurea “Andalas.” Publicly accessible records located during this research document that name in horticultural circulation by at least June 2024. Earlier circulation is possible, but documentation establishing when or by whom the name was introduced has not been identified.
Plants circulated as “Andalas” generally have broad green foliage carrying irregular yellow to yellow-green variegation. The amount and distribution of variegation can differ considerably between leaves. Some horticultural observations describe newly developing variegation changing in colour as the leaf matures, but these observations should not be treated as diagnostic of botanical identity.
The association with Exotica Aurea is well established in horticultural usage. However, no breeder record, introduction record or other primary documentation establishing Exotica ancestry has been identified. The association is therefore treated as horticultural classification rather than verified ancestry.
The name Andalas has longstanding geographic and cultural associations with Sumatra. Sumatra has historically also been known as Pulau Andalas, and the name remains prominent in West Sumatra. This provides relevant context for the horticultural name but does not establish that the cultivated Scindapsus originated in Sumatra or that its namer intended the name as a geographic reference.
Some horticultural sources describe Andalas as originating from Sumatra. Documentation establishing an original collection locality or otherwise verifying a Sumatran provenance has not been identified.
