“Black Baduy” is a horticultural name used for a Scindapsus circulating in the international plant trade.

Plants circulated horticulturally as Black Baduy are shown with broad, rounded to somewhat heart-shaped leaves. The foliage ranges through medium to deep green, with irregular pale markings that can appear cream, pale green or silvery-green. These markings range from fine speckling and streaks to much larger areas covering a substantial portion of the leaf. The amount and placement can vary considerably between leaves and between plants sold under the name. These characteristics describe plants circulating as Black Baduy and do not by themselves establish its botanical identity.

The name “Baduy” is also used for the Baduy, or Kanekes, an Indigenous Sundanese community in Banten, Indonesia. Traditional clothing associated with the Outer Baduy includes black or dark-blue garments. This provides a possible cultural context for the horticultural name “Black Baduy,” but documentation establishing that the plant was actually named for the Baduy people, their clothing or their region has not been identified.

The name itself should therefore not be treated as evidence that the plant originated in or was collected from Baduy territory. An original collector, collection locality, date of introduction, grower or selector, and documented wild provenance have not been established.

A botanical species assignment for plants circulating as Black Baduy has also not been verified. Until documentation connecting the horticultural plant to a formally identified species is available, its species is best treated as unresolved.

Variegated Greens classification: Horticultural / trade name of unresolved botanical identity.

The botanical identity, original collector, grower or selector, precise geographic origin, original naming circumstances, and documented ancestry of Black Baduy remain unresolved.
