Also encountered as: Banyumas, Scindapsus Banyumas, Scindapsus sp. Banyumas
Family: Araceae
Genus: Scindapsus
Species: Unresolved
Naming status: Horticultural / trade name
Origin / provenance: Associated horticulturally with Banyumas, Central Java, Indonesia; original collection locality and provenance not documented
“Banyumas” is a horticultural name used for a Scindapsus circulating in the international plant trade. Indonesian specialist horticultural sources use “sp. Banyumas” as a trade name, but documentation identifying the plant to a formally recognized species has not been identified.
Plants circulated simply as “Banyumas” are generally shown with relatively smooth, elongated to paddle-shaped foliage carrying pale green to silvery or mint-toned markings. As with other horticulturally named Scindapsus, appearance may vary between individual plants and leaves, and these characteristics should not be treated as a botanical diagnosis.
Banyumas is a regency in Central Java, Indonesia. Botanical research from Mount Slamet, which extends across Banyumas and neighbouring regencies, has documented unidentified Scindapsus growing among the climbing vegetation of the region. This establishes that Scindapsus occurs in the broader geographic area, but it does not establish that the horticultural plant called “Banyumas” was collected there.
No original collection record, collector, collection number, herbarium specimen, or other documentation connecting the horticultural plant specifically to a wild population in Banyumas has been identified. The geographic name should therefore not be treated by itself as proof of provenance.
Extended horticultural names containing “Banyumas” are also in circulation, including “Exotica Marble Sp Banyumas” and similar supplier-used forms. Available documentation does not establish whether these represent selections of the plant circulated simply as “Banyumas,” separate plants associated with the same geographic name, or other horticultural relationships. They are therefore not treated here as alternative names for Banyumas.
A botanical species assignment for plants circulating as Banyumas has not been verified. Although several Scindapsus species occur naturally in Java, geographic occurrence alone cannot establish the identity of the horticultural plant.
Variegated Greens classification: Horticultural / trade name of unresolved botanical identity.
The botanical identity, original collector, precise collection locality, original naming circumstances, and documented ancestry of Banyumas remain unresolved.
