“Black Dragon” is a horticultural name used for a Scindapsus circulating internationally in the plant trade. Indonesian export records document plants shipped under the names “Scindapsus pictus Black Dragon” and “Scindapsus Black Dragon” by 2023. These records establish Indonesian horticultural circulation but do not establish where the plant originally arose or was collected. The use of Scindapsus pictus in trade records does not by itself verify its botanical identity.
Plants circulated horticulturally as Black Dragon are shown with broad, oval to somewhat heart-shaped leaves. The foliage ranges from dark to medium green, with irregular lighter green and yellow-green markings. These can appear as fine speckling, blended patches and larger pale areas, with considerable variation in the amount and placement of the markings from one leaf to another. Some horticultural examples also show silvery-grey markings. These characteristics describe plants circulating under the Black Dragon name and do not by themselves establish its botanical identity.
Several extended names are also used horticulturally, including “Black Dragon White,” “Black Dragon Variegata,” “Black Dragon Variegated,” and “Black Dragon Tricolor.” Available documentation does not consistently establish whether these names represent separate selections, particular expressions of variegation, or descriptive labels attached to Black Dragon. Their exact relationship to plants circulated simply as Black Dragon therefore remains unresolved.
Plants circulated specifically as “Black Dragon Variegata” can show pronounced variegation on broad, somewhat heart-shaped leaves. Documented examples include deep-green foliage with irregular yellow-green areas, finer mottled markings and some silvery-grey patterning. Individual leaves can differ considerably, with the pale colour occupying a relatively small portion of some leaves and a much larger portion of others. These observations document the appearance of plants circulated specifically as Black Dragon Variegata; they do not establish that all Black Dragon plants share the same expression or that Variegata represents a separately established selection.
The use of words such as “White,” “Variegata,” “Variegated,” and “Tricolor” requires caution. In horticultural usage, these words may describe the appearance of a plant without establishing a separately documented selection. Without records explaining how these extended names originated or were intended to be used, the names alone cannot establish distinct ancestry or identity.
An Indonesian specialist supplier also circulates a plant called “Black Wizard,” which it describes as a mutation of Black Dragon with greenish-yellow variegation. This documents a supplier-reported relationship between the two horticultural names, but independent documentation confirming the proposed mutation history or ancestry has not been identified. Black Wizard is therefore not treated here as another name for Black Dragon.
No botanical publication or other reliable documentation has been identified that establishes the species represented by plants circulating as Black Dragon. Likewise, an original collector, grower or selector, precise geographic origin, original naming circumstances, and documented ancestry have not been established.
Variegated Greens classification: Horticultural / trade name of unresolved botanical identity.
The botanical identity, original collector, grower or selector, precise geographic origin, original naming circumstances, and documented ancestry of Black Dragon remain unresolved.
